VAT-free purchases

Certain mobility products, such as wheelchairs, scooters, and other equipment for disabled individuals, can be sold VAT-free to eligible customers.

If you’re eligible for VAT exemption, you won’t have to pay VAT on qualifying mobility goods under the VAT relief scheme. AbleDay will simply charge the VAT-free price, so you won’t need to pay VAT upfront and then reclaim it from the government.

Who is Eligible for VAT exemption?

You may qualify to buy mobility products VAT-free if you are chronically ill or disabled, and the products are for your personal, non-business use.

According to HMRC, ‘chronically sick or disabled’ means:

You have a long-term physical or mental impairment that significantly affects your ability to carry out everyday activities.

  • You have a condition recognised as a chronic illness by the medical profession, such as diabetes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis or heart disease.
  • You have a terminal illness.

Temporary conditions, like a broken leg, do not qualify for VAT exemption.

VAT exemption is not based on age. However, if you are over 60 and have a chronic illness or disability, as described above, you may still qualify for VAT relief. Simply being over 60 does not automatically grant you VAT exemption.

Which mobility products are eligible for VAT exemption?

All mobility equipment sold by Ableday are available for VAT-free purchase if you meet the above HMRC eligibility criteria.

Installation, servicing, or repair of these items may also qualify for VAT relief. Additionally, certain home adaptations (such as ramps, lifts, and wider doorways) may be VAT-exempt.

How to purchase VAT-free

VAT exemption is applied through self-declaration. When pruchasing via the AbleDay website you simply need to tick the ‘I want to claim VAT exemption’ tick box on our cart or checkout page. Then complete the required field for the reason that you meet the criteria for being ‘chronically sick or disabled.’ A medical assessment is not required.

If you are purchasing on someone elses behalf, such as a parent, guardian, doctor, or carer you can complete this on the end users behalf.
